PRESENTER (British): My
name is Nathan Black and I’d like to share a little bit about Car Giving, which
is my nonprofit car recycling company here in England. I’d be happy to answer
any questions and give out our contact information at the end of my talk.
To start off, let
me tell you how we started. Car Giving began four years ago in London. I used
to work at a local scrap yard and noticed that there were plenty of cars being
brought in to the junkyard. Those cars were then broken down to their saleable
parts. The rest of the car was turned into scrap metal. This seemed like a
waste to me. I got the idea to start a charity for cars, so that owners could
donate their cars and receive a large tax benefit at the same time.
So, in the month of
May four years ago, I opened my nonprofit. We accept any model, year or make of
car. And yes, we accept cars that no longer run. You can deliver the car to one
of our approved car lots, or we can pick it up for you. Once we have the car,
we sell it at auction. If the car does not run anymore, we sell it for scrap
metal. The money is then donated to charity. As the owner of the car, you are
able to deduct 100% of the market value of your car. So, if you bring in a car
that is worth £500, then your official donation amount is also £500. We will
also send you emails to let you know where the money accrued from the sale of
your car has been sent. Right now, we send all of our revenue to three major
charities. More information about these charities is listed on our website.
Now, if you’d like
to donate your car, you must be able to provide us with some information. We
need the make and model of the car. We also need the car’s registration number
and the tax expiration date. We’d also like to know how recently the car has been
used and the mileage of the car. Like I said earlier, we can pick up the car
from any location, free of charge. It usually takes us one week to pick up the
vehicle, regardless of its location. To date, we’ve sold over 700 donated cars
through auction, and raised close to £85,000.
If you don’t have a
car that you’re interested in donating, but you’d still like to help, we could
use your assistance. As our organisation continues to
grow, we need more people to answer phones, assist with picking up vehicles,
and sending emails to donors. Volunteer spots are open for Tuesdays and
Thursdays in our London office. We also have an office in Newcastle, which
could use some help as well. We require a commitment of at least two hours per
week.
For those of you
who are interested, our phone number is 1111 000 0101. Our business hours are 9:00AM to 5:30PM. Our website is www.giveacarsaveapound.com.
We’re typically able to respond to emails within three days. Our website also
features pictures of donated cars that are available for purchase. We list
times, dates and locations of upcoming auctions on our website as well.
If
you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask. Thank you for your time and
continued support of Car Giving.
